La Mer Noire
La Mer Noire
La Mer Noire is a single-movement somber piece for solo piano lasting 6 minutes 30, separated into six parts of roughly equal length. It is inspired by the painting "Fishing on the black sea" by Arkhip Kuindzhi, illustrating its dark and oppressive tone full of contrasts. La mer noire will be recorded on a grand piano. Estimated publish date will be september or october 2026.
The intro of the score establishes the usage of modal (usually phrygian) scales as foundation for more complex harmonies and, occasionally, bitonalities. The somber yet tender right hand usually remains unchanging while the left hand goes through many different phrases, hereby juxtaposing the upper and lower half of the original painting. The phrygian scale progressively develops into more complex harmonies, culminating in the modern harmonic textures at the end.
