Impressions is a roughly 16-minute-long sheet music collection for solo oboe and cor anglais. It consists of ten individual short pieces, or "tableaux". Each one is inspired by a different setting and tries to depict a motionless still life of said setting, where each small phrase on the instrument simply reveals another corner of the same image. The entirety of the score will be recorded with musicology student and cycle 3 oboist Eva Boutemy.
The score consists in large parts of slow, thought-provoking melodies on the oboe, but for each one, there's also another rhythmically-driven fast-paced phrase. The style is mostly inspired by modern music and techniques, with hints of various traditional folk music, notably from celtic sand middle-eastern arabic cultures.
Below is a brief overview of all ten works.
A colourful, solemn opening piece illustrating the constant motion of the galaxy headed straight towards us. It features arpeggios of extended chords.
Danish and nynorsk for "northern light". The contemporary techniques, slow tempo and non-western scales illustrate the unfamiliar nature and elusiveness of this natural phenomenon.
A lively, fast-paced piece about meadows and sparse forests in early summer, kept cool by the wind. This is depicted by short runs and syncopated rythms.
This work is inspired by slower irish pieces and traditional ornamentation. The oboe is treated here similarly to the traditional uileann pipes. It comes with a stripped-down version without the ornaments, for improvisations and free ornamentation.
A shorter modal piece that features runs and double-tonguing.
This slow-paced modal intermezzo heavily features straight glissandi.
One of two pieces for the cor anglais. A loud, colourful and eclectic piece showcasing the huge range of sounds and emotions that can be conveyed on the instrument. It illustrates observing a storm at night while safe inside.
An energetic, complex and rhythmically-driven work that heavily draws from both bebop and hard-bop.
The romanticist chords underline the melancholy of the piece inspired by thick, cold winter fogs. It features the upper register of the oboe a bit more prominently.
A calm piece for cor anglais with long phrases and staccatos. The gradual falling of the melody and the little leaps in it showcase the snowflakes joining the thick snow coating the garden.
