Feux Follets
Feux Follets
Feux Follets is a single-movement piece for solo violin lasting 7 minutes 30, separated into four parts with each their respective characteristics. It illustrates mysterious will-o-wisps, floating and dancing at night on the edge of a forest down a boreen. The piece balances a light and festive timbre with a somewhat heavy, nocturnal tone. La mer noire will be recorded on a violin by Cycle 3 violinist and concertmaster Jade Grimaud. Estimated publish date will be october 2026.
The first part of the score remains calm and heavily features double-stops, while occasionally hinting at the more vivacious parts following it. It cuts abruptly into the second part centered around pizzicati and agressive open strings. The third and fourth parts both mirror the previous two parts, when they're not actively quoting them.
Feux Follets is predominantly in dorian. Occasionally, the score remains tonally ambiguous with the mixolydian subdominant being of equal importance.
The somber yet tender right hand usually remains unchanging while the left hand goes through many different phrases, hereby juxtaposing the upper and lower half of the original painting. The phrygian scale progressively develops into more complex harmonies, culminating in the modern harmonic textures at the end.
